Tips on how to spend summer in the Czech Republic

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Every nation has slightly different customs and summer activities. What are the Czech ones?

Maybe you are about to move to the Czech Republic, or maybe you have already arrived but are still becoming familiar with the environment and the people.

Maybe you've been living in the Czech Republic for a while and you already know how Czechs like to spend their free time in the summer. But maybe you live in a community, or maybe you don't have enough Czech friends yet to keep track.

Let's have a look at what I think Czechs like and prefer doing during their summer holidays. This doesn't apply to all of us, of course.

A school year ends on June 30 and kids start their two-month summer holidays. This is the time when adults often opt for their holidays. Some go to the sea side or the mountains, either by car or by plane. Others travel around the Czech Republic. We will focus on what summer activities you can do and enjoy in the Czech Republic and hopefully you find some inspiration here :-).

A popular activity is visiting castles, chateaus and ruins, of which there are many throughout the Czech Republic. Usually you can see them from the outside, take a free walk around the surroundings, in the gardens or forests. Or you can pay the entrance fee and go on a guided tour. There are also "played" tours, which means that you are not guided through the castle or chateau by a guide, but by actors in period costumes who show you what life was like there. Very often you will also come across various fairs and festivals that are organised in the summer season.

Music and theatre festivals are also an important part of summer. I recommend going to one and enjoying the culture in the open air.

Did you know that hiking trails are a unique Czech tradition. The first hiking trail was created in 1889 and was 14 km long. Now there are about 43,000 trails in the Czech Republic and neighbouring countries have been inspired and started using a similar system. If you would like to go for a walk or hike, you can plan your route on the Czech Tourist Club website, where you will find useful information and tips:

When the weather is good, we go swimming at swimming pools, ponds, lakes, rivers and in recent years, biotopes have become very popular. These are natural swimming pools.

Czechs are also passionate cyclists. There are already a large number of websites that can plan a route from one place to another, or recommend a route based on difficulty and other parameters.

If you want to get from one place to another, just open, for example, maps.cz and enter the information.

And I must not forget my last, but no less important tip, namely going to the cottage. Don't you have one? Never mind, it is possible to rent one and spend beautiful moments in the countryside, where life goes slower and it will definitely recharge your batteries for the next school year :-).
